MIRIAM
for mezzo-soprano, chamber and electronics
"Miriam" is one of the most important compositions that I have ever written. The piece is my diploma composition crowning my BMus studies in Composition at The Academy of Music in Łódź.
The idea to present a composition depicting extreme emotional states arose on a person suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.
A very important aspect in this particular case was the occurrence of psychotic symptoms based on the mystical sphere (alternate contact with God and Satan). The current view of the text layer was strongly influenced by the reading of the schizophrenic's diary, thanks to which the problems connected with the sensory disorders could be faithfully reflected. In the score, the text has been written in four fonts to distinguish graphically differences between extreme emotional states. The vocalist - Kinga Borowska included "Miriam" to her doctoral dissertation after experiences related with preparation for premiere of the composition.
